Welsh Premier Women's Football League Launch

History was made in Aberystwyth on 24th September 2009, when the first ever Welsh Premier Women's Football League match kicked-off. The opening match at Park Avenue saw Aberystwyth Town Ladies beat Llanidloes Town Ladies 2-0 in front of 367 people in the Northern Conference.

The prize for the Winners of the competition not only includes the prestige of being crowned the inaugural Welsh Premier Women's Football League Champions, but also £8,000 in prize money and a place in the UEFA Women's Cup, which will be awarded to the League Champions, when in previous years, it's been awarded to the Cup Winners.

The new League, funded by the Football Association of Wales, comprises of eight teams with four clubs based in the Mid/North and four in the South. Joining this evening's two sides in the Northern half are Wrexham Ladies and Caernarfon Town Ladies, whilst the quartet in the south is Swansea City Ladies, UWIC Ladies, Manorbier Ladies and Newcastle Emlyn Ladies.

The League was launched in Haverfordwest on Sunday 20th September 2009 at the Wales v Belgium Women's International Match, when all eight clubs were represented, along with the Wales Women's Team Manager Adrian Tucker and League Secretary John Deakin.

Deakin launched the men's equivalent, seventeen years ago and is optimistic about the new League, which will certainly boost the Women's game in Wales.

"I am looking forward to going to the first ever game in the League at Park Avenue on Thursday evening. It certainly will be a notable occasion for Womens Football in Wales and I look forward to working for the development and success of the League over the coming months and seeing the Champions representing the Association in the UEFA Womens Club Championship next Season."
