Brave Bangor Go Down with a Fight against Portuguese
Europa League Result...Bangor City 1-2 Maritimo (3-10)
Bangor City took a shock early lead at the Racecourse Ground in Thursday evening's Europa League Third Qualifying Round, but two second-half goals from the outstanding Portuguese outfit meant that Nev Powell's side were beaten 2-1 on the night.
The Citizens opened the scoring when Sion Edwards' free-kick was hit home by Alan Bull, who netted his first for the club. Nev Powell's side continued to exert pressure on their visitors with Edwards and Nicky Ward both missing the target.
The Portuguese did have a number of chances in the opening half as Brazilian Tcho was denied on a number of occasions. They did score the equaliser just three minutes after the interval when Adilson beat Paul Smith in the Bangor goal and Marquinho made it 2-1 on the night on 58 minutes.
The defeat ends a very good European campaign for the Welsh Cup Champions who beat Finnish side Honka Espoo in the last round. Now boss Powell will focus on the start of the Citizens' Principality Welsh Premier League campaign - And what better pre-season schedule than the last few weeks in their European campaign.
